Applying A Tourniquet (TQ)
Applying a tourniquet (TQ)
Can only be used on extremities (arms and legs)
Place TQ as high as possible above the wound but not over a joint like an elbow or knee
TQ’s should only be used on major bleeds not minor cuts or scrapes
Once TQ is applied be sure to pack and wrap wound site
Once TQ is applied it can only be removed by a doctor or medical professional
TQ should be tight enough to stop blood flow to that extremity. If you can feel a pulse below the wound then TQ is not tight enough
If one TQ doesn’t adequately stop blood flow, another TQ can be applied above the original TQ
Use TQ in conjunction with applied pressure directly to wound and wound elevation above heart
